Is The Bible Good For Women? That's a provocative question, especially in today's day and age, and one that Wendy Alsup sets out to explore in her new book, Is The Bible Good For Women?: Seeking Clarity and Confidence Through a Jesus-Centered Understanding of Scripture. I appreciated that Wendy is not just a Christian and a former church teacher/deacon, but she's also a mom and math teacher. I appreciated her logical mind and approach to the topic. The back cover says:

"Is it possible to embrace the inherent dignity of womanhood while still cherishing the Bible? Many, both inside and outside the church, are concerned that an orthodox understanding of the Bible is threatening and even harmful to women. After all, the Bible has a number of passages regarding women that are deeply troubling and hard to read. But is that assessment accurate?

Wendy starts by giving an overview of the topic and spend time laying a foundation for the reading and interpretation of the Bible as a whole before delving into women's issues specifically. I enjoyed that she took the time to do this as it makes the book more credible and easier to understand as a whole. Oftentimes books can have a laser focus on one issue and completely ignore or discount the Bible and Christian teachings as a whole, leaving a warped or biased perspective. This book aims to give the whole picture, and doesn't shy away from tackling the tough issues and stories presented throughout the Bible. Discussion questions are also included making this a great book club pick. I highly recommend this book to any Christian woman in order to have a thorough grasp of the Bible, feminism, and what the Bible really says about women. It's so important, especially in today's world climate.

I'll admit - I wanted to read Can I Just Hide In Bed 'Til Jesus Comes Back?: Facing Life With Courage, Not Comforters by Martha Bolton and Christin Ditchfield mainly because of the cute cover (I mean, just look at it!) and the fun title. I often just want to hide in my bed with junk food, books, and Netflix and retreat from the world and responsibilities. However, I know that hiding in bed really isn't the answer to life's problems. Forgiving Our Fathers And Mothers by Leslie Leyland Fields (with Dr. Jill Hubbard) is one of the best books on forgiveness I've read in a long time. Each chapter details a different aspect to the parent/child relationship and need for forgiveness, followed by a word from Dr. Jill and study questions. I really enjoyed this format. It was like getting to the heart of the matter with Leslie, and then visiting a professional psychologist (Dr. Jill) to process your emotions afterward. Leslie uses her own real life story, plus the stories of others who have had difficult relationships with their parents, plus plenty of Scripture, to trace the path to forgiveness and healing. This book really hit home for me. Warning: it will probably make you cry! Leslie's story, as well as all of the others, were alternately emotional, touching, sad, horrifying, and redeeming. I liked how Leslie brought practical tips to questions such as, "Do I have to forgive?", "How do I forgive?
