Can I Just Hide In Bed 'Til Jesus Comes Back?

I'll admit - I wanted to read Can I Just Hide In Bed 'Til Jesus Comes Back?: Facing Life With Courage, Not Comforters by Martha Bolton and Christin Ditchfield mainly because of the cute cover (I mean, just look at it!) and the fun title. I often just want to hide in my bed with junk food, books, and Netflix and retreat from the world and responsibilities. However, I know that hiding in bed really isn't the answer to life's problems. I figured I'd pick up this book and see what Martha and Christin have to say about facing life head on. The back cover says:

"Depression, fear, a sense of unworthiness, and unfulfilled dreams can make women retreat to their beds—figuratively and literally—and refuse to face life. Yet most of the time, hiding in bed makes matters worse. Who needs emotional bedsores? Authors Martha Bolton and Christin Ditchfield gently show women how to climb out from under their emotional bedcovers, face their fears and doubts, and step into the lives God has planned for them.

Can I Just Hide in Bed ’til Jesus Comes Back? faces down the fear, depression, and unfulfilled dreams that cripple many women to the point of wanting to crawl in bed—for the rest of their lives. Compiled as a collection of short, mostly humorous and warmhearted stories, it offers readers practical, concrete steps to help them move forward when they are ready. Essays are interspersed with special humor features such as “Top Ten” lists, while “Whenever You’re Ready” sections offer Scriptures, journaling questions, and practical suggestions for “putting your feet on the floor” and “taking a few steps forward.” The book addresses four themes:

-Facing feelings of fear, anxiety, discouragement, and depression
-Facing people and relationship issues
-Facing the pain of grief and loss
-Facing life—and getting yours back"

Can I Just Hide In Bed 'Til Jesus Comes Back? is a lighthearted book full of humor and laughter (and Top 10 Lists). I was expecting more of a deep book, but this one was more fluffy and shallow. It's more of an encouraging/inspirational book than a deep look at depression, grief, faith, etc. It would make a nice gift for a friend who is down in the dumps and in need of a laugh or some perspective. The chapters are very short and bite-sized (2-3 pages each), so you can pick it up and read a quick chapter here or there. It was a quick read for me and made me laugh, although in some parts the "hiding in bed" theme wore a little thin and got a little corny. However, there were nuggets of inspiration in there as well.

I received a copy of this book from Tyndale in order to provide an honest and unbiased review. All opinions are my own.
