The Widow Of Saunders Creek

The Widow Of Saunders Creek by Tracey Bateman was unexpected and different in several ways to me. First off, the title. To be honest, the title was rather unappealing to me. It sounded like it was going to be a cheesy romance novel based on the title. However, I decided to give it a chance even with the less than appealing title, and it proved to be a wonderful book, and not a cheesy romance novel at all. Corrie Saunders has just lost her husband, Jarrod, in the war in Iraq. She is struggling with her feelings and grief and decides to continue their plans to restore his grandparent's old home in Saunders Creek. While there, she has experiences that lead her to believe that her dead husband is communicating with her from beyond the grave. However, Jarrod's cousin, Eli, who is restoring the home, doesn't believe in ghosts. This novel sensitively deals with spirits and ghosts from a Christian perspective and is very refreshing and different from anything I've ever read. Of course, Corrie and Eli end up falling in love and that is a very sweet and well written storyline as well, not following typical "romance novel" patterns. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it. I received a copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I'll admit - I wanted to read Can I Just Hide In Bed 'Til Jesus Comes Back?: Facing Life With Courage, Not Comforters by Martha Bolton and Christin Ditchfield mainly because of the cute cover (I mean, just look at it!) and the fun title. I often just want to hide in my bed with junk food, books, and Netflix and retreat from the world and responsibilities. However, I know that hiding in bed really isn't the answer to life's problems. Forgiving Our Fathers And Mothers by Leslie Leyland Fields (with Dr. Jill Hubbard) is one of the best books on forgiveness I've read in a long time. Each chapter details a different aspect to the parent/child relationship and need for forgiveness, followed by a word from Dr. Jill and study questions. I really enjoyed this format. It was like getting to the heart of the matter with Leslie, and then visiting a professional psychologist (Dr. Jill) to process your emotions afterward. Leslie uses her own real life story, plus the stories of others who have had difficult relationships with their parents, plus plenty of Scripture, to trace the path to forgiveness and healing. This book really hit home for me. Warning: it will probably make you cry! Leslie's story, as well as all of the others, were alternately emotional, touching, sad, horrifying, and redeeming.
